The Windeby puzzle: history and story
by Lois Lowry:

Lowry takes us back to the life of a 2,000-year-old bog mummy. Estrild is not like the other girls in her village; she wants to be a warrior. Varick, the orphan boy who helps her train in spite of his twisted back, also stands apart. In a world where differences are poorly tolerated, just how much danger are they in? This book has great historical reference with real photos of the bog mummy and the story of how a warrior child may have ended up in the bottom of the bog.

Kill Joy
by Holly Jackson:

Six suspects. Three hours. One murder…Pip is not in the mood for her friend’s murder mystery party. Especially one that involves 1920’s fancy dress and pretending that their town is an island called Joy. But when the game begins, Pip finds herself drawn into the make-believe world of intrigue, deception, and murder. But as Pip plays detective, teasing out the identity of the killer clue-by-clue, the murder of the fictional Reginald Remy isn’t the only case on her mind …

This free program provides the opportunity to engage in activities with your child to help early literacy development and school readiness before he or she enters kindergarten.  It is shown that children with well developed early literacy skills have greater success learning to read and generally have greater success throughout their school years.

The foundation of this program consists of five categories: Read, Play, Talk, Write, Sing.  You and your child will complete activities of your choosing in these categories.  Something as simple as singing your favorite song in the car counts as an activity completed.
Let’s get started!

  • Each time you complete an activity in a set category fill in your circle.
  • Once you have all of your circles in all five categories filled in bring your sheet to library.
    • Your child will receive a free book for each completed sheet.
    • Collect your next sheet for your next set of 50 activities.
  • After finishing all 10 sheets your child will receive a special certificate and a book.  By the end of the program your child will have received 11 books.

The end date for this program is when your child enters kindergarten, so please don’t feel rushed.  Have fun and enjoy all of the wonderful experiences you and your child will have together.
